Quo vadis- neural networks

How important are neural networks in machine vision today? Where and when are thy used?Several years ago many people have been impressed by the idea, vision systems acting "intelligent" as…Continue

Is the smart camera dead ? 1 Reply

This is of course a provocative title and supposed to be taken with a grain of salt. However, for years on end we listened now to prospected growth rates of smart cameras and are confronted left and…Continue

The smart camera is far from dead. One will see increasingly application-specific smart cameras - to a certain extent that's what vision sensors are. Many smart cameras used in machine vision are really application-specific - 2D matrix code readers, those associated with label applications including OCV, robot guidance, etc. While smart camera is generally very programmable to address many applications, use is generally for a specific generic application like those mentioned above.

I also note that smart cameras are making there way into security/surveillance market where they incorporate video analytic-based software as well as into intelligent transportation applications, where implementation is generally single purpose - lane departure, drowsy driver detection, etc. All these applications will only see more application of smart cameras in one format or another.

Sony (VIP) actually just released their second series of Smart Cameras on an Industrial/Professional Level last year. They haven't quite caught on in popularity yet but they are definitely far from dead. I believe CIS Americas also released their own version of a smart camera. They are great for Microscopy applications I have found.
