Vacation time in 3D

More and more often I see 3D technology capable of generating a large scale point cloud representation of the real world very apart from any production or design tasks.

Entire landscapes are scanned as well as the interior of ancient Mayan temples. The result can then be presented as a virtual tour through whatever was three-dimensionally digitzed.

Now lets combine this with active 3D display technology (aka 3D monitors without the need of wearing ugly goggles) and lets put on top some vision technology for augmented reality. And whoosh, we are in 3D vacation land. What a cool application for way complex technology.

Reminds me somewhat of Star Trek holo deck vacation. Only better.

I wonder if there are already companies out there making use of these possibilities.
