CMOS-based cameras and CoaXPress everywhere at VISION 2011– but CCD is still strong

The Vision Trade Fair 2011 held in Stuttgart November 8^th to 10^th was the most successful to date, with 323 exhibitors breaking the 300 mark for the first time as well as setting a new visitor record of 6,752 highly qualified visitors.  This is great news about the growth of the machine vision market! 

There were several technology trends at the show which are also exciting advances in the market.  We observed the following:

Many CMOSIS-based cameras

It seems that CMOS has been accepted in high-end, high quality applications with the advances made in global shutter CMOS image sensors from companies such as CMOSIS.

CCD image sensors are here to stay

CMOS continues to gain on CCD.  But CCD is fighting back in Machine Vision, differentiating themselves with better image quality. Kodak and Sony showed impressive products.

A lot of talk about 3D
In our previous blog we discussed the trend towards 3D imaging.  Application discussions and 3D imaging components were all over the exhibition.

USB3 Vision

The expectations are very high for USB3 Vision.  Adimec is a member of the USB3 Vision group.  We’ll keep you posted. Point Grey presented their USB3-cameras and others as well.

CoaXPress

CoaXPress continues towards full market acceptance with more than 18 exhibitors showing products.  A Plugfest for interoperability compliance testing and CoaXPress certification was offered.  Another plugfest will be held at
the ITE in Japan in December to allow for physical layer compliance testing and certification.

New Applications

Machine Vision cameras are being used in more and more different applications. We noticed an increase in hyper or multispectral imaging discussions to inspect all kind of surfaces and situations.  Also, many attendees for the show are designing and building defense systems or intelligent transportation systems.  The combination for low cost and high quality from the machine vision market is making it very appealing to these markets. We would like to extend our congratulations to the winners of the VISION Award 2011:  3D Dental Scanner which was developed at the Austrian Institute of Technology and is being commercialized by the Klagenfurt-based start-up company a.tron3D.  This is the 19^th year the VISION Award was given for an outstanding innovation in machine vision.
